Planner tasks in Copilot Chat: useful, and worth watching for task hygiene

Copilot Chat is picking up Planner: create a task, update one, or ask what’s outstanding, all without leaving the conversation to open Planner itself.

Useful on its own terms, and worth pairing with a thought about task hygiene, since a quick prompt won’t necessarily follow the same conventions a team has built up doing this by hand.

General availability begins worldwide in early September 2026, with Microsoft’s stated rollout window extending all the way to late December 2027, considerably longer than most updates in this set (Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 516577). It applies to Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and Planner on desktop and web.

Users will be able to create Planner tasks and plans from within Copilot Chat using natural language prompts, view task and plan details there too, and manage updates across both Copilot and Planner without switching apps. The current version displays task details as text; Microsoft has flagged an interactive task card as a planned follow-up release.

Existing Planner permissions and access controls apply throughout; Copilot only creates and retrieves task information a user already has permission to access, and no changes to underlying Planner data storage are expected.

The compliance answers here are fairly routine, Copilot working within existing permissions rather than expanding access. The more practical thing worth thinking about is task quality, not security:

• Natural language task creation can drift from how your teams normally structure Planner. A task created by typing a quick prompt into Copilot Chat may not follow the same naming, categorisation or bucket conventions a team has built up over time, which matters more the more structured your Planner usage already is.
• This is genuinely still an early version. The text-only task view is explicitly described as a first step, with an interactive card version still to come, so the experience is likely to keep changing over the many months this rollout spans.
• The unusually long rollout window is itself worth planning around. Communicating this as “coming in September” risks confusing users who don’t see it for months, since Microsoft’s own timeline suggests a staged rollout running well into 2027.

• Users of Microsoft Planner, particularly teams with established naming or structuring conventions worth protecting
• Helpdesk and adoption teams fielding questions as the rollout reaches different users at different times

No action is required, but there’s useful groundwork worth doing given how this feature is likely to be used from day one:

1. Update internal training and adoption materials for both Copilot and Planner, since this genuinely blurs the line between the two tools rather than being a Planner-only or Copilot-only change.
2. Set light expectations with users about task consistency, particularly if your organisation relies on structured Planner conventions that a quick natural language prompt might not follow.
3. Brief helpdesk and support teams, since questions are likely to arrive gradually given the long rollout window, rather than all at once.
4. Treat the current text-only experience as a first version, and expect the interactive task card release to change how this works again later.
